Audiometers designed to measure and characterize hearing loss by determining the lowest audible level (i.e., hearing threshold) of a patient for pure test tones, signals (e.g., speech), or both that include visual stimuli such as lights and/or images to reinforce the test procedures. The audiometers work by encouraging the patient to hear by a visual scene shown on the same side as the sound. Several different techniques and equipment are available to perform these tests; usually these audiometers include, in addition to the standard audiometric equipment such as tone generators, amplifiers, sound level monitors, and earphones, one or more screens for lights and/or image display, toys, and remote controls that permit keeping the patient isolated inside the audiometric booth. Visual reinforcement audiometers are intended for conducting diagnostic tests for hearing disorders and assisting in other otologic diagnosis in children and other patients who have difficulty understanding how to perform a standard audiometer test.
