Prostheses designed to be surgically implanted encircling the esophagus at the gastroesophageal junction to address symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Antireflux prostheses may function by providing physical support to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) in cases of LES dysfunction (i.e., hypotenstive LES, transient LES relaxations). Alternatively, antireflux prosthesis may function by holding the esophagus in place in patients with a sliding hiatal hernia (a condition that causes displacement of the LES outside the supportive structure of the diaphragm, which can contribute to development of GERD).
