Wound drains designed to remove fluid from wounds by means of a sealed circuit that is not open to the atmosphere. These drains typically consist of a stretch of plastic tubing that is attached at its distal end to a suction-generating device (i.e., evacuator) that produces negative pressure (i.e., suction) within the drain system tubing to promote fluid withdrawal. Suction-generating devices typically consist of a bulb-like or spring-loaded device that is activated by manual compression. Some suction-generating devices also function as a reservoir for collection of wound exudate.
