Endostatin, a potent antiangiogenic protein, is the proteolytically produced C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII (alpha 1). Collagen XVIII (alpha 1), the alpha chain of type XVIII collagen, is encoded by the human COL18A1 gene. Endostatin potently inhibits endothelial cell proliferation and angiogenesis. It may inhibit angiogenesis by binding to the heparan sulphate proteoglycans involved in growth factor signaling.
