?:definition
  • Laryngeal implants designed to move a weaken or immobilized vocal fold to the middle position. This movement allows the normal vocal fold to meet the paralyzed vocal cord providing a complete closure of the larynx. These devices may consist of pre-shaped metal (typically titanium) or hard plastic implants; some other silastic implants may be shaped during the surgical procedure. The implant is introduced using a minimally access surgical procedure known as medialization laryngoplasty. Vocal fold medializing implants are used to improve the larynx function during speech, coughing, swallowing, and breathing.
