Surgical dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the caliber of surgical openings in the tracheal structures/passages (i.e., tracheostomy) by passing them through the incision facilitating the opening of a direct airway. These surgical dilators typically consist of an elongated instrument having a distal end and comprising a tip that is bent at almost right angle to the rest of the instrument to help reach the tracheal opening located at depth in the neck. Some tracheostomy dilators have smooth and rounded tips. They are commonly used during tracheotomy procedures, primarily in situations where a prolonged need for airway support is anticipated and also in emergency situations when conventional endotracheal intubation is not possible.
