External shock wave therapy (ESWT) electrohydraulic systems designed for dermatologic procedures. These systems typically consist of an electrically powered main unit (i.e., a console) that includes electrohydraulic shock wave generators and handpieces with appropriate characteristics (e.g., frequency, energy level) for dermatologic treatments. When a high voltage is developed across the electrodes placed on a water-filler tank, the discharge of energy generates a vaporization bubble that expands and then collapses with the result of a high-energy pressure (e.g., 500 bar) wave (i.e., the shock wave) typically in the ultrasound frequency spectrum . Electrohydraulic ESWT systems are intended to trigger biological actions on the skin and subcutaneous tissue cells; they are used for the treatment of diseases such as wounds and diabetic ulcers.
