?:definition
  • Electronic sphygmomanometers designed for noninvasive measurement of blood pressure in animals. These electronic devices include sound, pressure, volume, displacement, or other pressure-dependent variable sensors placed externally on the arteries; a transducer for conversion into an electric signal; and an electronic unit that converts and displays the signals as blood pressure values. Some electronic animal sphygmomanometers may feature special enclosures or restrainers to hold the animal in position in relation to the cuff; they may also have environmental controls (e.g., temperature controls) to provide a less stressful environment for the animal to allow more accurate blood pressure readings. Electronic sphygmomanometers used on research animals may include the ability to send data electronically to a computer for storage and analysis purposes.
