  • Ophthalmic implants designed to partially or totally substitute the natural iris. These devices usually consist of a thin plastic or silicone disc sheet resembling a washer. Some silicon implants are foldable, allowing its insertion through a small hole at the corneal rim, then the implant is unfolded and fixed in place. The implants are usually made of a similar color than the natural iris in the other eye or of a chosen color for patients with complete absence of the iris (i.e., complete aniridia). Iris implants may decrease glare, increase the depth of focus, facilitate differentiation between dark and light objects, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the eyes in patients with partial or total aniridia. The implants are not recommended for cosmetic change of the eye color.
