  • Ballistocardiographs designed to measure and record data and graphics (i.e., a ballistocardiogram) of the external movements (e.g., the sternum movement) of the body caused by thrust of the heart during systolic ejection of the blood by measuring the acceleration of the movement. These devices are based on small lightweight sensors (accelerometers) that measure the acceleration of the body movement which is related to the force exerted by the heart. Typically, a tri-axial accelerometer is used to determine the acceleration following a 3-D axial system, then the values are digitally processed and displayed. The display shows the values of the acceleration amplitudes as the vertical axis and the time as horizontal axis (i.e., a ballistocardiogram) during a time period of less than a minute. Accelerometer ballistocardiographs are used for research and also clinically, especially for detecting early cardiac abnormalities and to characterize particular diseases.
