Tags containing device information designed for asset identification using radiofrequency (RF) signals that also include temperature sensors. These tags frequently consist of electronic chips with antennae that can transmit data using RF electromagnetic radiation. RF tags may include batteries to power an attached radio transmitter (active tag); other tags work with the RF energy supplied by a location device (passive tags). Some tags include batteries only to supply energy to the internal circuitry or to the attached temperature (semi-active tags) but not to generate RF signals. Temperature sensor asset identification tags are usually attached to the surface or inside of assets such as warmers, refrigerators, and freezers. The tags are used mainly as components of alarm, recording, and/or monitoring systems of the temperature in the equipment and/or environment in clinical laboratories, pharmacies, or other health facility areas; they are also used to track the temperature conditions of the assets during storage and/or transportation.
