?:definition
  • Readers designed to determine the presence and identify radiofrequency (RF) identification tags in a pre-determined area. RF tag identification readers can be passive or active. Passive readers only can be used to detect and identify active (i.e., battery-powered transmitting) RF tags; active readers send a RF signals to passive tags that send back a reply signal to the reader. Some active readers are used with passive tags that include a battery used with the only purpose of providing power to the tag circuitry when the reader provides an interrogation signal. Fixed readers are used to establish a zone of RF tag identification while portable (either handheld or mobile) can be used in any location. RF identification tag readers are used to locate assets, persons, or any other device or equipment that needs identification (e.g., for safety, inventory).
