Portable devices that continuously or intermittently (by patient self-administration) administer a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to patients to produce conscious sedation outside of the usual health facility setting (e.g., inside of ambulances, during emergency response, or in the field during military operations). These portable units do not have ventilator capabilities but rely on patient inhalation to administer the gases. Nitrous oxide anesthesia units contain hardware (valves and hoses) that allows connection to portable nitrous oxide gas tanks (included) and standard supply oxygen tanks (not included) and contain flow regulators and meters that measure gas delivery (which is usually at a preset ratio of 50 percent nitrogen oxide and 50 percent oxygen). The gas mixture is delivered into a breathing circuit (usually a face mask) that may contain a gas scavenging system to help prevent the escape of exhaled gases. Portable nitrous oxide anesthesia units are usually housed in a sturdy carrying case to allow for easy portability under rugged conditions.
