Instruments used to measure and display the passage of time, typically in units of hours, minutes, and seconds. Clocks can be either mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic (e.g., quartz oscillator) time measuring instruments. The time displayed by clocks can be noted by the positon of indicators pointing to numerals ranging from 1 to 12 (for 12-hour display) or from 1 to 24 (for 24-hour display). Alternatively, clocks can show the time with a display of digital numbers. Often, clocks can include a display of the current date in month, day, and/or year format. Clocks can be freestanding or attached to a wall. Clocks used to show elapsed time are also available.
