Scanning systems intended to assess the cervix for the presence of precancerous cells (i.e., moderate to high-grade cervical dysplasia) using both reflectance spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. These systems include a microprocessor-based computer, a light source, and a handheld unit that incorporates a camera and spectrometer. During the scanning procedure, a single-use cervical guide is attached to the handheld unit and the distal end of the guide is placed in contact with the cervix, allowing light to be shone on the tissue surface and for spectroscopic data to be gathered. The computer in the base unit interprets the generated spectroscopy data based on a preprogrammed algorithm.
