  • Devices designed to remove dental amalgam from wastewater generated during dentistry procedures and intended to reduce the amount of mercury released into public sewer systems. Amalgam separators achieve separation of amalgam from wastewater using one or more methods, including centrifugation, filtration, ion exchange, and sedimentation. These units typically include input and output connectors that allow the units to be installed within a dental facility\'s wastewater/vacuum pump system. Typical installations are placed in-line with the effluent stream, either chairside (i.e., downstream of a single operatory) or at a centralized location upstream of the vacuum pump (i.e., downstream of multiple operatories). Some amalgam separator installations are placed downstream of the gas/liquid separator of a dry vacuum pump-powered system. Alternately, some amalgam separators integrate the separator and collection canister and the entire unit is replaced periodically.
