?:definition
  • Molecular assay reagents intended for use in identifying epigenetic modifications of chromatin (i.e., the DNA and proteins of which chromosomes are comprised). Epigenetic changes do not alter the primary nucleotide sequence of DNA but rather involve chemical modification of the DNA (e.g., methylation of certain nucleotides) or DNA-associated proteins (e.g., histone acetylation, histone methylation). These epigenetic modifications affect chromatin structure and function and are one mechanism by which gene expression is regulated. Epigenetic changes at specific genetic loci may be involved in the etiology of certain diseases or may be induced by the presence of certain diseases and, therefore, tests for the presence of these epigenetic modifications may have diagnostic utility.
