Airway clearance units designed to generate oscillation of the air column in the bronchial airways by directing sound waves at various frequencies into the airway. These sound waves are conducted down the bronchial tubes and induce vibrations in the gas column, which are layered on top of a patient\'s normal breathing. Vibration of the air column induces vibrations in the airway walls, potentially shearing mucus from the airway walls via oscillatory forces. Acoustic percussion airway clearance units typically consist of a control unit and a handheld unit. The control unit produces sound waves at user-controllable frequencies (typically between 5 and 1,200 Hz). The handheld unit includes a speaker and a mouthpiece to direct the generated soundwaves into the patient\'s airway. Handheld unit connectors may allow the simultaneous use of positive expiratory pressure or delivery of aerosolized medication.
