Filters designed to remove unwanted frequency components (i.e., frequency ranges) from an electrical signal in an electronic circuit, passing through desired frequency ranges while attenuating undesired frequency ranges. Electronic signal filters may be passive or active. Passive filters generally consist of resistors, capacitors, and inductors and do not require external power. Passive filters only remove certain frequencies from the electrical signal and cannot add energy to the circuit or control the current passing through the circuit. Active filters in addition to resistors, capacitors, and inductors include components that can increase the power of the electrical signal (i.e., amplifiers).
