Small electrical appliances designed to brown sliced bread and bread products, such as bagels and buns, by exposing them to radiant heat, usually generated by electrically-heated wire coils. In pop-up toasters, bread slices are inserted vertically into the slots on the top of the toaster, and the bread is exposed to heating elements oriented vertically, parallel to the bread slice. In a conveyor toaster, the bread is placed horizontally on a conveyor belt, and the bread is passed slowly by the heating element. Toasters may have temperature and timer controls.
