Devices, usually electrically powered, installed under a food service sink between the sink drain and the trap, that shreds food waste into pieces small enough, generally less than 2 mm (0.079 in), to pass through plumbing. Food waste disposers typically have a grinding chamber with a cutting element such as a shredder or grinding ring, an electric motor, and a partial rubber closure or removable metal cover on the top of the disposal unit to prevent food waste from flying back up out of the grinding chamber and to reduce noise. Food waste disposers can be continuous feed or batch feed. Continuous feed models are used by feeding in waste after they are started, and batch feed units are used by placing waste inside the unit before being started. Many disposers have legs that keep them off the ground and are adjustable in height to fit beneath the sink.
