  • Implantable pumps designed to remove accumulated ascitic fluid from the area between the abdominal wall and the abdominal organs (i.e., the peritoneal cavity) and transport the fluid to the patient\'s bladder from which it is excreted by urination. The battery-powered pump units are typically implanted subcutaneously in the patient\'s abdomen. These pumps are typically connected to two surgically implanted silicone catheters; one connecting the pump to the patient\'s abdominal cavity and the second connecting the pump to the patient\'s bladder. These pumps automatically remove small volumes (e.g., 5 to 10 mL) of ascitic fluid every 5 to 10 minutes and include controls to prevent pump activation when no ascitic fluid is present in the peritoneal cavity or when the bladder is full. Devices that allow the transcutaneous alteration of pump settings and charging of pump batteries are available.
