  • Systems designed for ophthalmic tissue photocoagulation by applying laser energy via an intraocular endoscope under image guidance. These systems usually consist of a console unit, an intraocular endoscope, and a video monitor. The system\'s console unit includes a light source for ocular illumination (e.g., xenon lamp); a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera; appropriate connectors for video output to the video monitor, recorders, and/or printers; and appropriate connectors for the intraocular endoscope. Some consoles incorporate a therapeutic diode laser to perform photocoagulation via the endoscope; other consoles may be used in combination with a separate ophthalmic laser to perform photocoagulation. The intraocular endoscope typically consists at its proximal end of a flexible cable containing fiber optic fibers capable of transmitting both the illuminating light and the photocoagulating laser. The distal end of the endoscope consists of a handpiece with a needle-like tip appropriate for insertion into the intraocular space through a corneal incision. These systems are typically used in image-guided photocoagulation procedures in the eye, particularly photocoagulation of the ciliary body (i.e., cyclophotocoagulation) for the treatment of glaucoma.
