Synthetic sutures made of a copolymer of polypropylene and polyethylene, a nonabsorbable (i.e., nonbiodegradable) polymer. These sutures are typically available in sterile monofilament sections (e.g., 18, 30 inches/45, 76 cm long), which may be attached to a single-use needle as an integral device. They are frequently colored for easy identification during surgery. Polypropylene/polyethylene nonabsorable synthetic sutures keep their tensile strength for long periods of time and are not absorbed by tissues. Their intended use includes soft-tissue approximation, particularly in cardiovascular applications.
