Vascular closure devices that utilize an absorbable, collagen patch or plug to seal the arteriotomy (or venous puncture) and stimulate thrombus formation and platelet aggregation at the site in order to achieve hemostasis. They are designed to be percutaneously applied to an arterial puncture (arteriotomy) and/or venous puncture site, e.g., using a guide wire and delivery device. Collagen plug closure devices typically incorporate three components: the collagen plug or patch, an anchor, and a self-tightening suture, all of which are absorbable. Hemostasis is achieved by sandwiching the arteriotomy between the extravascular collagen component and the intravascular anchor.
