Electrical test instruments consisting of a series of resistors, capacitors, and/or inductors typically controlled by switches that allow a user to set the instrument to function as a resistor, capacitor, and/or inductor with any resistance, conductance, or inductance within the instruments range. The resistor, capacitor, or inductor units in these instruments are typically present in decimal steps (i.e., decades) that allow the user to select any integral value (0 through 9) within each decimal range of resistance, capacitance, or inductance. Thus, the range of settings of the instrument lies between the integral value of the smallest resistance, capacitance, or inductance unit and the sum of all units; and the precision of the instrument is defined by the integral value of the smallest unit. Decade boxes typically include a set of binding posts for connection of electrical wires.
