Threaded rods (i.e., screws) intended for insertion in the bones of the spinal column and used in various spinal applications (e.g., fracture fixation, spinal fusion). These screws are typically composed of non-biodegradable materials (e.g., metal; carbon fiber, polyetheretherketone [PEEK]); however, screws composed of biodegradable materials are also available. Spinal screws frequently incorporate a head design that facilitates attachment of additional spinal fixation hardware (e.g., plates, rods), allowing stabilization and/or immobilization of one or more vertebral segments.
