Systems intended for nonradioactive, wire-free lesion localization during excisional breast procedures based on detection of a dedicated nonradioactive marker implanted preoperatively at the site of the lesion. Some of these systems may also be used in sentinel lymph node mapping procedures through detection of an injectable nonradioactive tracer. Tumor resection guidance systems typically consist of a console and handheld probe, which provide an indication of proximity of the probe to the implanted marker. Tumor resection guidance systems based on various detection modalities are available, including infrared light-activated radar reflector magnetic seed, and radiofrequency identification tag based systems.
