Infusion systems designed to maintain a patient\'s intravascular fluid volume by automatically infusing intravenously a volume of fluid (e.g., isotonic saline) matched to the patient\'s urinary output. These infusion systems consist of an infusion pump console and a tubing set for saline solution infusion and urine collection. Following an initial saline bolus, the collection set captures urine excreted by the patient, and the volume excreted is measured by a scale integrated with the pump console. In response to urine excretion, the pump console administers to the patient in real-time a volume of saline solution equal to that excreted as urine. These infusion systems may be used in intravenous hydration therapy procedures to reduce the risk of over- or under-hydration relative to standard infusion. In particular, these systems may be used during renal protective procedures that maintain high urine throughput (greater than or equal to 300 mL/h) in order to increase clearance of toxic substances (e.g., contrast media) from the kidneys.
