Molecular assay reagents intended to identify gene variants common within certain ethic groups that have the potential to be inherited by and cause disease in offspring of the tested individual or individuals. Various genetic diseases have been shown to occur more frequently certain ethnic populations (e.g., Tay-Sachs disease in persons of Eastern European Jewish origin, sickle cell disorder in African-American persons, cystic fibrosis in Caucasians, alpha-thalassemia in Asians). Ethnicity-based carrier screening panels test simultaneously for genetic variants in multiple loci associated with genetic diseases highly prevalent in a specific ethic group (e.g., genetic diseases common to Eastern European Jews). Ethnicity-based carrier screening tests are typically used as a part of preconception genetic testing.
