Devices designed to perform the automated or semi-automated identification and removal of bands and/or spots from electrophoretic gels (e.g., agarose gels, acrylamide gels). Some spot cutters may also allow the automated removal of bands and/or spots from membranes (e.g., nitrocellulose) to which analytes have been previously transferred by blotting procedures. Automated electrophoretic gel spot cutters typically include a charged-coupled device-based imaging system, light sources appropriate for visualization of visible and/or fluorescent labels, a robotically-controlled cutter, a mechanisms for transferring the removed spots/bands to tubes and/or plates for subsequent analysis, and a mechanism for washing the cutting head between cuts.
