Devices designed for the automated detection and removal of air bubbles from intravenous infusion lines during infusion of intravenous solution, blood, and/or blood products. These devices typically consist of a control unit that incorporates an air bubble detector (e.g., ultrasonic sensor) and a mechanism for removal of air bubbles from the infusion fluid such as a dedicated tubing set designed to allow air bubble-containing fluid to be diverted from the patient line to a waste collection container. Air bubble detection/removal systems are typically placed between the patient and the intravenous infusion source (e.g., gravity feed, infusion pump, in-line warmer).
