Systems designed to facilitate solubilization of analytical samples in a solvent by exposing the sample and solvent to high temperatures generated by heating the sample and solvent using an electromagnetic field with frequencies in the range of microwaves (typically around 2.45 GHz). Microwave digestion systems also expose the sample and solvent to elevated pressures, which may be achieved by heating the sample and solvent within a sealed vessel or by heating unsealed vessels with loose-fitting caps in a pressurized chamber. Microwave digestion systems are typically used to solubilize certain types of analytes (e.g., heavy metals) prior to elemental analysis.
