Active hemostatic agents consisting of a thrombin-containing matrix typically composed of collagen or gelatin. These hemostatic agents are thought to promote hemorrhage control by both active and passive means; the thrombin component activates proenzymes in the coagulation cascade and the collagen or gelatin component creates a physical barrier to blood flow. These hemostatic agents are applied directly to the hemorrhage site and typically remain there until absorbed by the body. Thrombin-containing hemostatic agents are typically supplied as a flowable gel, paste, or powder.
