Devices designed for direct measuring the volume of air coming out heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and that include an enclosure (capture hood) placed over the HVAC grilles or diffusers. This device usually measures the air volume in cubic feet per minute. The sensors used in these instruments are either thermo-anemometer (hot wire) or pressure sensors. The capture hoods can be various sizes and are usually made of fabric and include a hood frame, support rods and a plastic molded base. They can be used to measure either supply or exhaust airflow. Some units can also be used for measurements such as absolute and differential pressures, and air velocity, temperature and humidity. These meters are used as part of optimizing an HVAC system to ensure that air conditioning outputs are consistent.
