Machines resembling a typewriter that are used for recording speech in syllables or phonemes. The stenotype keyboard usually has 22 keys, including an asterisk key that has multiple functions such as deleting words or creating paragraphs. Multiple keys are pressed simultaneously (known as \'chording\' or \'stroking\') to spell out whole syllables, words, and phrases with a single hand motion. A stenograph machine may contain a microprocessor and connect to a computer. This device is used for generating transcriptions.
