Background: Nationally the majority of elective CIED procedures are performed as overnight stay procedures Since the inception of the CIED implant service at Tauranga Hospital, in 2008, elective CIED procedures have been performed on a same day discharge basis An audit was undertaken to assess the safety and efficacy of this practice Method: A retrospective audit was performed of all patients requiring a CIED procedure for the period of Aug 2008 through to July 2019 This included both initial implants and revisions The rates of complication were compared between those that were performed as an elective day stay procedure to all other implants Results: 1721 patients underwent 1857 procedures New implants 1442 (78%), Device replacement 327 (18%), prescription change and other procedures making up the final 5% 1044 procedures were elective procedures of which 93 8% had same day discharge, compared to 813 acute procedures of which only 5 5% were same day discharge A 6% complication rate was reported (113 complications in total) 38 (3 7%) complications in same day discharge patients vs 75 (9 0%) in all others Conclusion: Early ambulation and same day discharge post CIED implant is safe, even in complex CIED procedures Same day discharge could provide significant cost benefit
