There is no doubt that vaccination in pregnancy is an important strategy for influenza prevention Influenza infection in pregnancy can pose serious health risks to mother and child Vaccination in pregnancy not only protects the mother and fetus but also provides protection in infancy directly by transfer of maternal antibodies and indirectly by preventing transmission from the mother However, despite these benefits, pregnant women have not universally embraced influenza vaccination Maternal influenza vaccination has gained some traction in relation to the 2009 influenza pandemic and is now widely recommended, but uptake remains at best moderate in most countries Several reasons may explain this: first, a perception that influenza is not a serious infectious disease;second, the vaccine\'s often moderate effectiveness;and third and perhaps most important, perceptions of safety issues A comprehensive and proactive approach to vaccine safety is needed now more than ever with the hopefully imminent arrival of COVID-19 vaccines
