UNSTRUCTURED The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged researchers doing face-to-face research. We describe guidelines we developed to conduct cognitive interviews virtually that accommodate populations with limited internet accessibility. The guidelines describe essential communication and safety equipment and outline a procedure for collecting responses while protecting the safety of the participant and researcher. We also provide suggestions to facilitate the process including training participants to use the technology, encouraging them to respond aloud (a potential challenge given that the researcher was not physically present with them), and having the equipment ready to deploy (and testing it) in advance of the research sessions. Finally, the guidelines emphasize the need to adapt the interview to the circumstances and anticipate possible problems that might arise.
