The emergence of a novel coronavirus – severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – has resulted in a global pandemic The associated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has claimed many fatalities worldwide Observational studies and case reports have shown older age and chronic disease to be associated with a heavier severity in many cases of COVID-19 with higher apparent risk of mortality in the individuals affected Our aim in this review is to elucidate the possible impact of chronic diseases associated with the cardiovascular system such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cardiovascular disease on SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 In addition, we will cover recommendations and guidances from international scientific associations and discuss key learnings for the future
