Introduction Education is fundamental to bloodless medicine, which is the provision of quality medical care without the use of allogeneic blood employing various techniques in a multidisciplinary manner A multidisciplinary Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Group (BMSG) in University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has been organizing an annual Week of professional CMEs and public education in bloodless medicine since 2016 In 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, the physical meetings were substituted with Webinars This study examines the effectiveness and practicality of this on-line education in bloodless medicine occasioned by the pandemic Methodology Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Webinars were scheduled May 11-16, 2020 on Zoom, for 2 hours each day Pre-registration was required, but attendance was free The webinars were advertised on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, professional WhatsApp groups, and by email Zoom reports on the webinars were downloaded and analysed for the number of resource persons and attendees, countries of origin, profession, and timing Attendance and resource persons for the Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Week (BMSW) 2020 were compared with BMSW 2019 Results The BMSW 2020 webinars held on all 6 days There were 6 CME talks, 3 video presentations, 1 industry presentation, 1 panel discussion, and a quiz on the last day The resource persons were 7 speakers from 5 countries and 26 panellists from 7 countries, on a total of 5 continents Average total attendance per day was 537, with a peak concurrent attendance (excluding speakers and panellists) of 321 from 52 countries on 6 continents Speakers, panellists and attendees were multidisciplinary At peak attendees 52% were physicians, 9 7% nurses, 9 6% students, 2 5% pharmacists, 1 25% bloodless program managers, 0 9% medical laboratory scientists, 0 9% hospital administrators, and 23 25% others All sessions started within 5 minutes of scheduled time and ended within 10 minutes of scheduled time except for 1 day that featured a rescheduled talk All 7 scheduled talks were delivered by the scheduled speakers except 1 who had an emergency By comparison, BMSW 2019 resource persons were 5 speakers and 10 panellists Peak attendance was 76, with 65 8% doctors, 9 2% students, 7 9% nurses, 1 3% medical laboratory scientists, and no other medical workers All were from 1 country except 1 speaker Conclusion Movement of bloodless medicine education online as a result of Covid-19 pandemic resulted in more than 400% increase in attendance The resource persons increased by more than 200%, the audience became an international audience, and more specialties were represented However, all countries were in varying degrees of lockdown, which may have augmented the attendance Nevertheless, it is likely that the on-line webinar format will be retained for future meetings, at least in part, in view of the obvious advantages
