  • The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a significant impact on all facets of human health and daily living. The Association of American Medical Colleges has established strong recommendations for transitioning to virtual interviews for the 2020-2021 residency application cycle. The transition to virtual interviews is a double-edged sword and is bound to cause anxiety among senior medical students. Although such interviews serve as an opportunity to minimize expenditure and maximize flexibility, convenience, and time utilization, they come at the potential cost of sacrificing the ability to assess applicants and residency programs. Through this article, we discuss the pros and cons of the virtual interview process and offer suggestions for applicants and programs to optimize this experience. We will also elaborate on the possibility of magnified disparity in the number of interviews between applicants as a result of the lack of time and cost limitation. The Association of American Medical Colleges should strongly consider limiting the number of interviews an applicant can attend in each specialty, to avert this imminent effect.
