My neighbourhood, in Montreal, is an epicentre for the coronavirus epidemic in Canada It is also home to a high concentration of Hasidic Jews These facts are apparently connected, because so many Hasidic Montrealers recently returned from celebrating the holiday of Purim with Hasidic friends and family in New York, unknowingly bringing the virus with them This makes me uncomfortable, both because I fear for my health and that of my husband and baby, and also because of how it resonates with centuries of scapegoating As an anthropologist, I know that uncomfortable places invite reflection on important moral questions
